Cry, the Beloved Country is composed of three books, each structured to give insight into the separate lives Kumalo and Jarvis, while subtly showing how each life is interrelated (). The first book describes the plight of Stephen Kumalo, a native of South Africa, as he journeys through Johannesburg. While both parents were acquitted of involvement in Azaria's death in , the year of A Cry in the Dark's release, Azaria's death certificate still lists the cause of death as "unknown" and her Author: Ben Child.
A Cry in the Dark was based on John Bryson's book, Evil Angels (the film was released under that title in Australia and New Zealand) and directed by Fred Schepisi, who had earned worldwide acclaim for his film about an Aboriginal man, The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith. Schepisi has had a successful international career, but some of his best. "A Cry in the Dark" takes the time to marshall the case against Lindy, and the time to destroy it.
