    Drinking water is taken up from local rivers as well as groundwater. When coal ash ponds are in the area, they can contaminate local water sources in two different ways. One, they can be washed down over the surface to contaminate water, and two, the contaminated water from the coal can enter the water table.   The challenging market conditions has seen mine closures and major miners in Illinois diversifying away from coal. Alliance Coal, which has seven mines in the region, has shifted some of its focus to oil and gas for example, and in August the company announced it would cease coal production at its Dotiki Mine. It cited ‘weak market conditions.
